I think everyone knows this song. I didn't write it. Obviously, I didn't write it. I COULDN'T write it. It's one of those timeless, perfect songs. I don't write those. I write songs about girls and sadness with a little existentialism thrown in. Or religion, in the early days.

Now that I think of it this song touches all those bases, doesn't it? Huh. Well...anyway...

This of course is a cover of a Leonard Cohen song. It started out as a favor for my Dad's club's Christmas party and it grew to the point that I'm proud of the work I did on it and wanted to share it with everybody. So I secured the licensing (we're doing everything nice and legal here!) and here it is!

It's no secret that I adore Leonard Cohen. And no secret that I adore this song. But I've always been reluctant to cover it because it's one of my favorites and because absolutely EVERYONE has covered it to death. I've more than once called for a moratorium on cover versions of this song, just so I can keep enjoying Leonard's version(s). But...like I said, I kind of fell in love with playing it. And I think I brought enough of my own spin to the song to justify it. The only reason to do a cover is if you can do it better or if you can do it different. There is quite possibly no one better than Leonard Cohen. But this version is at least different.

I recorded all the parts in one day and mixed them down the next, in order to meet a deadline. All of the parts you hear are individually arranged. I wrote a full symphonic piece that came together one track at a time...in one evening. Big task! But I listen to this from time to time and am proud of how everything seems to have its right place and it all worked really well. Perhaps Leonard knew my heart was in the right place. Or maybe I just got lucky.

Whatever the case, I hope you enjoy it.
